How Vaser LipoSelection® Works
VASER Lipo® uses a minimally invasive technique called LipoSelection® to selectively break apart and gently remove unwanted fat. Target areas are injected with "tumescent fluid." Tumescent fluid numbs the area and temporarily expands the volume of the area, making fat cells easier to remove. A small incision will be made and the fat cells will literally be "shaken" free to be removed by a gentle suction. After the procedure, patients are prescribed a recovery regimen to help the skin retract and achieve smooth, natural looking results. After the procedure, a short period of rest (typically 12 hours) is recommended, followed by two to three weeks where strenuous activities should be avoided. Results begin to appear immediately after the VASER Lipo® procedure, and continue to improve with time as the tissues in the treatment area heal. Final results are typically seen in about three to four months.
VASER Lipo® vs. SmartLipo™
Unlike SmartLipo™, VASER Lipo® leaves surrounding tissue - such as nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue - relatively intact. It is used for smaller, more concentrated areas of the body and is used to shape the figure. Often Dr Malan will utilize VASER Lipo® to remove stubborn deep pockets of fat while using the SmartLipo™ procedure to also tighten the skin thus achieving better results than either device could obtain if used separately.
VASER Lipo® Safety and Risks
There are risks associated with any type of surgery, however those associated with VASER Lipo® are minimal when done by an experienced doctor such as Dr. Malan.
Common side effects can include:
- Temporary swelling, bruising, soreness, and numbness around the treated areas.
- Irritation and minor scarring around the incision sites
- Skin may be initially sagging or baggy. Gradually, the skin in the treatment area will tighten and retract, usually within a few months. In rare cases, the skin may remain somewhat loose.
VASER Lipo® is performed under local anesthesia and most patients are able to get up and move around immediately following the procedure. You can return to your normal activities as soon as you feel comfortable. Most people can return to work within a few days. Recovery may take longer if large areas were treated.

VASER LipoSelection® Frequently Asked Questions
How is VASER LipoSelection® different than other liposuction procedures?
The VASER Lipo® procedure is able to distinguish between fat and other important tissues, such as nerves and blood vessels, breaking up the fat while leaving other tissues unharmed. This approach offers superior results and a quick healing process; patients report minimal pain and bruising. The VASER LipoSelection® procedure allows Dr. Malan to work with such precision that he can shape delicate areas like the inner thighs, arms, chin and neck.
What areas can be treated with VASER LipoSelection®?
Unwanted fat can be efficiently removed with VASER LipoSelection® from abs, arms, back, hips, knees, love handles, neck and chin, saddlebags, thighs - any place you've developed a little "extra cushioning."
How much fat can be taken? Can multiple areas be treated at once?
Yes, multiple areas of the body can be treated at once. It is important to schedule a consultation with Dr. Malan to discuss how much fat you wish to have removed and in what areas, so he can assess what is right for you. Do keep in mind that VASER Lipo® is not a weight loss solution. The goal is to create a slimmer figure.
What happens if I gain weight after my procedure?
It is a common misconception that weight gained after a liposuction procedure distributes unevenly. If you experience weight gain or loss after your VASER Lipo® procedure, it will tend to be proportionately distributed over your entire body. Assuming a healthy lifestyle of proper diet and exercise, it will not return or migrate. If you do gain a significant amount of weight, the remaining fatty tissue will expand. Normal aging changes can also be expected.
Will I be left with a scar or loose skin after my procedure?
You will probably have a small incision scar, about 4 mm in length at each incision point. This scar may fade completely, but it depends on your skin's reaction to scarring. One of the advantages of VASER Lipo® is that the procedure minimizes trauma to connective tissues such as nerve endings and blood vessels, therefore preventing the appearance of loose skin.
